Charity Shop Window Design

Our new window poster is now ready to put up.

The window poster will give us a real identity in the village. Measuring 2 metres high by 1 metre wide, it completely fills one window panel in the shop front.

We will be starting to decorate the shop in the New Year and will put up the window poster at that point.

Restoring the Church in Megalohori

The Church of Zodoho Pigi (Ζωδόχου Πηγής) in the square of Megalohori, Agistri is considered to be one of the oldest churches on the island and is the main Cathedral Church for the population of the island.

Rendered and whitewashed many years ago, as was then the norm, the beauty of the original stonework has been lost to us...until now.
The Church has now had the render and whitewash removed and the original stonework has been cleaned and restored, providing us with the original look of this most beautiful building.
In accordance with our aim of supporting causes that protect, enhance and preserve the heritage of the island of Agistri,
Friends of Agistri made a donation toward the restoration of this church including towards the cost of the roof tiles, specially made for this style of church..

So here it is, restored to it's original glory.

A total donation of 500.00 euro was made to this project.

Charity Shop - Official Opening

Following 6 weeks of preparation, begging for furniture, fixtures and fittings, and of course stock to sell, the Friends of Agistri Charity Shop opened to the public on the 29th April 2009 at 10.00 am.

The President (Mayor) of the Island of Agistri, Giannis Athanasiou, officially opened the shop on the 13th May 2009 by ceremonially cutting a ribbon across the entrance. As we all entered the shop for the first official time, we stepped in using our right foot first, a tradition here in Greece.

This was then followed by the blessing of the shop by our local priest, the Reverend Elefterios Koumasides.

With all the formalities finished, members of the committee, The Mayor, his wife, Father Lefteri and local people raised a glass to the future success of the shop.

We were officially open, and the shopping began.

We are grateful to our volunteers and the local community for all their support in setting up the charity shop.
